People with mental illness are entitled to fair treatment and may:

- Receive services appropriate to their age and culture
- Understand treatment options and alternatives
- Receive care that doesn’t discriminate based on age, gender, race, or form of illness
Laws that will cover their rights include:
Americans with Disabilities Act. This law protects individuals with physical and mental disabilities from discrimination in employment, government services and activities, public accommodations, public transportation, and business enterprises.
Fair Housing Amendment Act. This law prohibits discrimination in housing based on certain conditions, including disability. Landlords and rental property owners must make reasonable efforts to satisfy the needs of individuals with disabilities.
Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act. This law allows the U.S. government to examine public facilities (e.g., institutions) for individuals with mental and physical disabilities to be certain that they’re secure and receive appropriate care.
