My research shows that listening to birds while walking in nature can promote well-being

My colleagues and I wanted to raised study the welfare and relationships between birds. We Did an experiment In which 233 people walked through a park – specifically the botanical garden of the University of Tübingen. The walk took about half an hour.

Participants filled out questionnaires on psychological well-being each before and after their walk. We also measured blood pressure, heart rate and cortisol levels (of their saliva) to realize a greater understanding of the physiological effects of the walk on well-being. To determine which additional bird songs to play through the loudspeakers, we checked out the outcomes of a Previous study We held In the study, volunteers listened to greater than 100 different bird songs and rated how nice they found them.

Participants were randomly divided into five separate groups. The first and second groups went for a walk through a garden with birdsong playing over a loudspeaker. Another group was also instructed to concentrate on birdsong.

The third and fourth groups also went through the garden, but this time they only listened to natural birds – we did not have extra speakers to play bird games in that area. The fourth group was also instructed to concentrate on natural birds.

The fifth group was the control group. The participants went for a walk within the garden wearing noise canceling headphones.

Benefits of Birdsong

In all groups (even the control group), blood pressure and heart rate decreased—a sign that physical stress was reduced after the walk. Cortisol levels also decreased by a median of about 33%.

Self-reported mental well-being, as measured by questionnaires, was also higher after the walk.

Groups that focused on birds saw an excellent greater increase in well-being. So while walks in nature had clear, physical advantages for stress reduction, specializing in birdsong further boosted those advantages.

However, the groups that went for a walk with the loudspeakers playing the birds didn’t see any greater improvements in mental and physical well-being than the opposite groups.

This was surprising, given previous studies showing birds Enriched health. The diversity of bird species can also be further shown Improve recovery and flexibility.

One possible explanation for this finding may very well be that participants recognized the playback voice as being fake – whether consciously or unconsciously.
