June 21, 2023 – Lab-grown chicken meat could be sold within the United States after two firms said Wednesday they received final approval from the Department of Agriculture for his or her products.
Upside Foods and Eat Just are the primary firms to undergo the assorted steps required to receive federal approval to sell cultured meat. The Food and Drug Administration previously said the meat was fit for human consumption.
“With the approvals, the United States will become the second country, after Singapore, to allow the sale of so-called cultured meat, which is obtained from a sample of farm animal cells that are fed and grown in steel tanks.” Reuters reported.
“It’s a dream come true,” said Upside CEO Uma Valeti. “It marks a new era.”
Cultured meat could appeal to consumers who’re environmentally conscious and wish to enjoy meat without slaughtering livestock.
“Cultured meat is neither vegan nor vegetarian” Above says on its website. “It’s not a meat alternative – it’s meat!
“We take a sample of cells, put them in a vessel called a cultivator and feed them the right mix of nutrients so they can reproduce and grow. After two to three weeks, the meat is harvested, prepared and ready to enjoy.”
Upside will initially be available at an upscale restaurant in San Francisco, Bar Crenn.
“The taste is phenomenal,” chef Dominique Crenn said of Upside. “The sear is perfect. The smell fills the kitchen. It hits the notes that everyone knows and loves.”
Chef José Andrés has agreed to serve Good Meat Chicken at one in all his restaurants in Washington, DC. Food dive reported. Eat Just is the parent company of Good Meat Inc.
It is alleged that the brand new kind of meat just isn’t expected to look in US grocery stores any time soon Associated Press reported. Farmed chicken is way more expensive than meat from farmed poultry and can’t yet be produced at the size of traditional meat, said Ricardo San Martin, director of the Alt:Meat Lab on the University of California Berkeley, in accordance with the Associated Press.
According to Reuters, animal production accounts for 14.5% of world greenhouse gas emissions, citing the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
