November 29, 2023 – New research shows that eating large amounts of white bread and alcohol is linked to a better risk of developing colon cancer.
The same study also found that consuming more fiber, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and manganese was related to lower risk.
The study, published within the journal nutrientexamined the chance of colorectal cancer related to intake of 139 foods and nutrients and analyzed data from greater than 118,000 patients.
Researchers at Zhejiang University School of Medicine in China used data from the British Biobank. They followed participants for nearly 13 years and located 1,466 cases of colorectal cancer during follow-up visits.
“They found that participants who developed colorectal cancer were more likely to have certain characteristics.” Medical News Today wrote. “For example, they were more likely to be older, have a higher body mass index (BMI), and be less physically active.”
Previous studies have linked health risks to excessive alcohol and white bread consumption.
Nutritionist Erin Palinski-Wade, who was not involved within the study, said Fox News“These results make sense because a diet rich in simple sugars, along with excessive alcohol, may increase the risk of cancer, particularly for those who are at increased genetic risk for developing cancer.”
However, she identified that there are more aspects that determine risk than weight-reduction plan. A food akin to white bread “will not harm or harm your health,” she said. Instead, the general quality of the weight-reduction plan plays a bigger role over time.
Fox reported that colorectal cancer is the third most typical cancer amongst adults within the United States, in response to the American Cancer Society. Around 153,000 recent diagnoses are expected this 12 months.
