Does exercising within the evening affect sleep?

Question
I’ve heard that you should not exercise within the evening because it may possibly disrupt restful sleep. Is this true?

Oh Traditional sleep hygiene guidelines include a advice to avoid exercising late within the day. However, research shows that many individuals can exercise within the evening so long as it’s near their bedtime.

A 2021 study i Frontiers in Public Health analyzed the results of evening exercise on sleep duration and quality in nearly 13,000 people, and located that moderate-vigorous activity accomplished at the least three hours before bedtime didn’t interfere with sleep. A 2025 study i Nature Communications Advised to exercise 4 hours before bedtime.

In addition to sticking to that evening exercise time-frame, you too can practice good sleep hygiene by doing the next:

  • Set an everyday bedtime and adopt a soothing bedtime routine
  • Turn off light sources akin to TV, computer and phone at the least an hour before going to bed.
  • Make sure your bed is comfortable, and your bedroom is dark, quiet and funky.
  • Do not take long naps throughout the day. If you wish a nap, limit it to twenty to half-hour within the early afternoon.
  • If you possibly can’t go to sleep after 15 to twenty minutes, move to a different room. Read silently until you go to sleep.
